I got this a few weeks ago but haven't had much of a chance to play around with it until now. It's an external flash for my camera. The idea behind this is to bounce light off of the ceiling/walls, so it's not directly on the person/item you're photographing. Direct flash (i.e. head on) is very harsh light, tends to distort colors, and makes big shadows, which doesn't make for the most beautiful portraits. I don't typically photograph using flash (natural light is best), but there are some situations that require it. Up until this point, I've been using a mirror that attaches to the top of the camera and bounces the light from the camera's built-in flash off the wall/ceiling. It works surprisingly well and was actually used to take this photo. However, it's not perfect in all low-light situations. So, this will certainly be a nice upgrade.

P.S. I bought this refurbished (refurbished by Nikon), which meant the price was significantly lower, and it's had a once over from the manufacturer that's guaranteed. Just a little plug that if you can find a quality seller, you can get some nice refurbished items without breaking the bank.
