QQ1: Picea abies-Picea excelsea (var.dinarica), Abete rosso, Spruce, Smrekov-navadna Smreka
Maximum height: 40-45m, but in Northern Europe it can reach 60m in height .
In the Karst region, there are no specimens of this height, but the tallest tree of whole Karst Region is just a Picea Abies of 51m (Hrušica forest, near Podkraj; 2012).
Habitat (natural reproduction): very wet, cold and deep calcareous soil.
It grows wild from 800m on Coastal Karst (but only on northern slopes) and from 500m to 1600m on Internal Karst; sub-alpine, continental and alpine climate.
Spread On The Territory: it's widespread and form little forests of its kind (most of all on mountain basins) or vast forests in association with Abies alba, Fagus sylvatica and, sometimes, Acer pseudoplatanus.
Distinctive features: It has a very regular conical form for each specimen; The bark have a reddish colour. The twigs with the needles are pending from the main branch, while those of silver Fir (Abies alba) tend to grow horizontally giving the tree a variety of forms.
Picea abies is the most widespread species in the World. It's wild from the Pyrenees (Spain-France) to the Pacific coast of Siberia (Russian Federation).
It's a strong tree, but it has suffered great damage during the bone-dry and hot summers of 2003 and 2012. Some specimens bear the consequences even now with a low production of needles.
In many european countries Picea abies is the traditional Christmas tree (Italy for example).
