The moon Io and Jupiter
This was a final project in my oil painting class. We were given pretty much free reign as to the subject as long as it wasn't based on fantasy, science fiction, etc. I was allowed to paint Jupiter and its closest moon Io as these are actual objects in the solar system. The planet Jupiter was based on several photographs that were made by the space probe Galileo as were the colours of Io being covered in ejected and molten sulfur. The mountain peaks are conceptual and based on volcanic mountain ranges here on earth as was the crater. I realized that the crater was being placed in the center but with the scale of Jupiter and the mountain peaks, I felt that I could get away with this as it did not necessarily draw your attention directly to it.
