Although known as such for some time, I'm sure by the mid '80s a more gender inclusive term would have been in use. Sorry about the picture quality, goodness knows what film I was using at the time as the quality's awful.
The picture shows what would likely have been one of the largest regular private hires which eminated from The Potteries, this being but part of the convoy.
I've forgotten now where the 'paper boys' (and girls) were going on this occasion but this was taken on the A500 at Talke one summer Sunday morning as the coaches prepared to depart for junction 16 of the M6. The contract had been won by GLW Travel of Milton, who having no buses of their own, 'subbed' it to Byrnes of Leek (part of the Berresford group). Frank Mc Sherry, Byrnes Traffic Manager, is seen wandering around in the outside lane of the dual carriageway.
The coach leading this part of the line-up was Byrnes Ford R1114 Duple Dominant CNT 320L, next was one of Berresfords ex LUT Plaxton Leopard 'XTB' twins, then comes Byrnes Leyland 401 engined Duple Dominant bodied Bedford YRT NTX 406L, now the other of the XTB's brings us to Berresfords Leopard Supreme VVT 419S and bringing up the rear, a hired in Bedford YMT Supreme from Bostocks.
In local enthusiast circles, there's a famous shot taken hereabouts of the same occasion in the late '60s when the hire was operated by PMT using a dozen or so Alexander bodied Daimler Fleetlines all parked herring-bone style for the press.
