SS Uganda.
In this totally ill-conceived picture taken by a 15 year old 'Renown' is a steam ship with which I was fortunate enough to have first hand knowledge.
The 'Peninsular & Oriental Steam Navigation Co' (P&O) had acquired the SS Uganda with the business of 'British India line' (BI), but the ship continued to wear the latter's black and white livery. The near 17,000 ton twin turbine powered 'Uganda' was kitted out as an educational cruise ship for the benefit of students, and it was in that guise that I was fortunate to sample it for a fortnight in 1975 around the Mediterranean and the Middle East. To be honest, I hadn't realised it was steam powered until with a deafening long blast on it's melodious deep toned chime whistle, we left Dubrovnik!
The vessel continued this existence until the Falkland's War of 1982 where she was hastily configured into a hospital ship. Returning from the conflict, a brief spell back in the world of educational cruising again for her until being laid up in the River Fal, Cornwall. In spite of efforts to save her too (see previous posting), her last voyage (Re named SS Triton) was to Taiwan where she became beached by a hurricane... scrapping followed in 1992.
In better times, the tidy looking vessel is seen shortly before our departure to one of the Greek Islands. The picture was taken against the advice of the ship's crew as the Yugoslavian authorities of the time took a dim view of people photographing ports and railways. ... now where's that picture of a train in these docks?!
