Just as other major world cities do, New York serves up a taste of Fused Grid Network's future.
Transiently, all motor transport is excluded from one major artery which becomes a complete and exclusive realm for pedestrians; they can move at their pace, randomly, risk-free, enjoying a new-found freedom and choice of multi-ethnic merchandise offered by the street vendors. An indelible awareness of a potential future sets in. ( Notice that the artery is still intersected by the east-west streets.) The Fused Grid Network (see this photo-stream, fusegrid dot ca or Wiki) assigns about one third of the total street length to exclusive pedestrian use. A living example of it is Stuyvesant Town, a coveted, delightful, prized neighbourhood in the heart of Manhattan (see drawing and photos in this stream). Its layout shows how asphalt can be turned to green and roads to footpaths and concrete into a garden.
