Sutter Buttes
The Sutter Buttes, located in the northern part of the Sacramento Valley in California, are the smallest mountain range in the world, only about 10 miles across. Formed from volcanic lava domes, they rise above the flat floor of the Valley. Just north of the Buttes is a large wetland / open water complex that is part of the Pacific flyway for ducks and geese migrating along the western United States. The white band visible towards the left side of the image is a huge flock of snow geese.
