Manland school (annex)
Victoria/Vaughan Road schools
The original school in the town centre of Harpenden.
Pupils decamped in the 1940s to their new junior and senior schools in more open country.
Part of the school became the public library, the other part on the right became the adult education centre.
In the mid 1960s this education part was used during the day as the annex of the main school for pupils aged 7 & 8 as a temporary measure while extra buildings were built at the new school.
The playground received a thin layer of tarmac on its poor surface, and outside toilets were built on the right hand side of the playground.
It was ideal for train spotters on the way back from school.
The very sloping playground made ball games difficult.
Until I saw this view, I never realised how many bits were added over the years.
One of the old B&W photos now re-colourised automatically.
