I found that avoiding this area was the best idea, if your polished shoes and sandals had not been worn that day, they usually passed inspection, you were then free to go out to play.
Wearing wellingtons when out of doors and slippers or plimsolls indoors meant that there was little in the way of chores to do. Indoors, if you were doing other chores that involved dish washing, floor moping, you were allowed to wear your wellington boots. Shoe polishing to me was something to avoid.
