Church of St Mary

Memorial to Francis Mary Cory †1837. Marble in stone frame. Chancel, north wall.

Francis had been born on in 1809, the eldest daughter of the Revd. John and Mary Hare, the rector and owner of Docking Hall. In 1836 she married Robert Cory, born in 1811. He was the ninth of thirteen children of Robert and Ann Cory of Great Yarmouth. His father had been mayor and was a successful attorney with a wide portfolio of land. Robert Cory graduated from Pembroke College in 1834 and was ordained a priest the following year. After her death he gave up his curacy at Rockland St Mary and residence at Attleborough, to travel to Jerusalem and Asia minor, only returning in 1840.

His grief is reflected in the monument, adapted from Flaxman’s monument to Mrs Morley †1784, who had died at sea and in child birth. She is shown under a simple Gothic frame rising above waves, holding her dead child as she is accompanied by angels. Francis had died of small pox after the still birth of their child and she is shown in long drapes holding her dead child, who unlike Mrs Morley’s does not gesture to heaven. The monument is neither signed nor documented and the handling of her head and hands are slightly clumsy.
