Sitting pretty . An Amur Leopard at YWP
* A portrait of a very relaxed Amur Leopard at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park . The habitat for these Leopards consists of the temperate forests of the Russian Far East and Northern China. For camouflage in the snow, their coat is paler than other Leopard subspecies. Given the areas they inhabit are so and the fact there are believed to be less than 100 in the wild means the chance of seeing one outside of a managed environment is about zero . They are classed as Critically Endangered therefore zoos and wildlife parks worldwide are playing a vital role in assisting with the reintroduction efforts of this species. The staff at the park deserve congratulations in 2015 the adult Amurs Freya and Drake produced three cubs a huge cause for celebration . After being born in Yorkshire Wildlife Park in June, handlers have carefully protected the cubs from the general public. In fact the park has just released photos and CCTV footage of the cubs with their mother in advance of vaccinations which will take place shortly. It is hoped that the birth of the cubs will herald greater efforts to reintroduce the species into their native Eastern Russian habitat.
“It is very exciting that in the next two to three years, we could be involved in working with the international conservation community in reintroducing Amur Leopards back into their native Russia,” YWP Animal Collection Manager Simon Marsh said in a statement.
The Leopards in Yorkshire live in a huge enclosure, Leopard Heights is the largest facility of its kind in Europe. Designed as a purpose built breeding and reintroduction facility, it won the 2013 BIAZA Award for Significant Advances in Husbandry & Welfare. The Amur Leopard is the only big cat with a reintroduction programme approved by the IUCN.The spectacular £300,000 reserve boasts a 10m tall viewing tower, giving guests an unrivalled view across Leopard Heights. Fromviewing platform visitors come face to face with the Leopards as they scale their 10m tall wooden climbing frames.
It was wonderful to see a leopard properly for the first time . We have been on three African Safaris without ever seeing one in the end all I needed was to go to Doncaster.
