Scarce swallowtail

This shot is a little soft but it was the first time I have seen one of these butterfly’s. It’s a Scarce Swallowtail (Iphiclides podalirius podalirius ) and I think rather beautiful. I photographed it on our terrace in France. There was a buddleia in the garden that attracted a lot of butterflies but during the whole week there we only saw this species on one occasion. So its common name seemed rather appropriate.

 

When we returned to England I read some information about them it seems despite the common name ("scarce"), this species is quite common. The scarcity of UK migrants is responsible for the English common name. This species is widespread in most of Southern Europe
