The lighthouse was built in 1912 replacing an earlier 1858 brick tower. The 55 foot tall memorial to Samuel de champlain with six stone columns was added around the light and dedicated in 1912 by president William H. Taft. At the base of the tower are bronze sculptures of Samuel de Champlain, an American Indian and a french voyageur. The lighthouse was inactivated in 1926.
The site was originally a French fort, captured by the English in the French and Indian war and seized by Vermont's Green Mountain Boys during the American Revolution. Located at the south end of Lake Champlain across the road from the Crown Point Historic site.
State funds were provided for extensive repairs in 2009 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Champlain's discovery of the lake that bears his name.
