Around 1785, the adventurer Don Tomás Lucero found gold near La Carolina; this was the first recorded sighting of the area as a town. It named it La Carolina in honor of Charles III of Spain.
In 2023, it was recognized by the World Tourism Organization with the Best Tourism Villages award.
