Bradbury Thompson was one of the stars of our design heaven back in the 1960's. His work still shines out through time.
Born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, U.S., he developed an early love for books and their design. From his high school days when he worked as a draftsman in a civil engineering firm, through his design work at Washburn University when he was a student, his life was at the drawing board.
He later worked with Steves Printing Co. in Topeka where he learned the prepress, typography and printing processes thoroughly and then worked for a large yearbook publishing company in Topeka for five more years.
He took his portfolio to New York in 1938 where he was hired by Rogers-Kellog-Stillman and on his first day on the new job, was given the Westvaco Inspirations magazine to design. He continued designing it for twenty four years, sixty one issues over time until 1962. I had some issues many years ago but they are lost in time.
Westvaco Inspirations was a very popular publication with graphic designers, and the issues are still relevant to this day.
