Hells Canyon
The northern entrance to Hells Canyon. There was a dirt road for some distance along the riverbank starting at Asotin on the Washington side of the Snake during the years that I lived in the Palouse. The river at this point is the state line between Washington and Idaho.
The native Americans who had lived in this area for thousands of years put up some bitter fights to keep the land but were almost all driven off to reservations or died of the white man's diseases. I was told by the NezPerce and Coeur d'Alene Indians that a few of the warriors from the various tribes banded together and took off into what is known today as the Sheepeater mountain range, on the Idaho side of Hells Canyon where they vowed to fight to the last warrior which they did. The official white man's version of the name's origin is different.
