killdeer (Charadrius vociferus) female with chicks

While out birding today, I heard a killdeer calling behind me. I turned around and was surprised to see this mother killdeer calling her four chicks to gather beneath the safety of her wings. This is the earliest I've seen killdeer chicks. Papa was close by as well. Epping, New Hampshire. May 7, 2022
