213/365 # Lit up

This needs to be viewed large, it's gone all pixellated this size.

So, due to a series of events that confirm my status as a total wanker, I ended up in a field, in semi-darkness, trying to figure out how the hell a flash works. This is my effort.

I wasn't going to post it as a 365 but it looked better when I got it off the camera, and the other shot I had in mind, taken after this one and indoors, was more boring than listening to a Coldplay album on repeat. And this isn't another 50mm close-up shot - it's good to put the 50mm away sometimes, it's too easy to use it all the time like I have been recently.

I've figured out a couple more things today, and those are that I need to get a stand for my flash post-haste, what a good idea some sort of diffusion device would be and aren't gels like the cleverest thing ever? I wish I had some. I'm trying to blag some free samples from Lee Filters but nothing's arrived yet, so I'm guessing they've gotten wise to the hundreds of people pretending to be from a photography company that start with their initials and end in 'Photography' - mine was 'DWR Photography' . . . catchy eh?

Anyway, I'm in this field because the spot I had in mind on the beach was too close to some other people milling around, and while I could've gotten away with taking some photos, the flash tends to attract attention. So I took a walk out to where I took this shot (day 104) and had the most wonderful time trying to balance my flash on its wobbly little stand on top of uneven patches of grass and mud. I should also point out that the wireless trigger that attaches to my flash attaches to the hot shoe connection underneath the flash, rendering the whole unit twice as wobbly and prone to falling over. I swore. A lot.

Later on I went back to the beach to try and get something cool, but it was too dark for my remote to work, and all I ended up with was wet Chucks from when the tide came in and went right over my feet.

I'm going to bite the bullet and add this to the Strobist group, because I need help getting used to using lights, it's much, much harder than I imagined. But the results, when I get them right, are rewarding.

So, Strobist info: SB600 on the ground to my left ( this way >>>) at 1/16 power.

Comments on how to make this shot better, bearing in mind I have just the one flash, are very, very welcome. I can take constructive criticism so hit me!

So much better viewed large, there's loads of detail missing at this size
