Having Traits Doesn’t Mean You Have a Disorder

Social media has made people hyper-aware of mental health terms — but having a few traits does not automatically mean you have a disorder.

We all relate to certain behaviors sometimes.

You might like things organized, but that doesn’t necessarily mean OCD.

You might enjoy attention, but that doesn’t mean narcissism.

A mental health disorder is diagnosed when patterns become persistent and start significantly affecting a person’s daily life, relationships, work, or emotional functioning.

Awareness is important.

But self-diagnosing everyone around us — or ourselves — based on short clips online can do more harm than good.

Mental health deserves understanding, nuance, and professional care — not labels taken out of context.
