Over the summer (2025), I spent three months in the USA working at a children’s summer camp for the second time. One of the things I love and appreciate most about being at summer camp is the overwhelming drive towards promoting and improving children's self-esteem and confidence. That said, the camps have an equally invested stance on promoting the self-esteem and confidence of their staff and it is from here that the inspiration for this piece came.
‘Envelope of affirmation’ is an envelope for storing positive words, stories and memories that you can look back on whenever a pick me up is needed. I decorated the envelope with things that make me happy, including being in nature, gardening and flowers, boxing and home. I started off decorating small circles on paper using colouring pencils and fine liner pens.
I added different words to create a word bank and each word was then stuck to the bottom of a glass pebble which lived inside the envelope. I wrote affirmation based sentences around the envelope and encircled them with glass pebbles to give the impression of being hugged, inside a bubble and safe. The envelope is multi purpose and letters or small images can also be added. The sliver strip along the bottom gives a mirror effect with the empowering words ‘I see you’.
