Glass opening of the Niemeyer Sphere
The Niemeyer Sphere in Leipzig is among the last designs by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. He conceived it in 2011, it was realized after his death and opened in 2020. The white sphere, roughly twelve meters in diameter, appears to hover on a concrete pedestal above the grounds of a former factory and today extends the Techne Sphere canteen with a restaurant and event space. Its twenty centimeter thick concrete shell is broken up by two large geodesic glass openings with a total of 147 triangular elements that can darken by means of liquid crystal glass depending on the sunlight. The resulting window surfaces are striking and form a kind of glass dome that fills the interior with abundant daylight. The building is regarded as an example of how modern architecture can be integrated into a historic industrial ensemble.
