Key Factors for PCB Substrate Selection

Choosing the right PCB substrate affects performance and cost, focus on 3 factors:

1.Temperature resistance:For high-temperature scenes (e.g., automotive engine PCBA), select substrates with Tg≥170℃ (e.g., FR-4 with high Tg) or PI substrates (Tg>260℃);for consumer electronics (e.g., smartphones), common FR-4 (Tg≥130℃) is sufficient.

2.Electrical performance:High-frequency PCBA (e.g., 5G modules) needs substrates with low dielectric constant (Dk≤3.5) and low dielectric loss (Df≤0.005) to reduce signal attenuation;ordinary PCBA can use standard FR-4 (Dk≈4.5 at 1MHz).

3.Cost & processability:FR-4 is cost-effective (about 2-5 per square meter) and easy to process (drilling, cutting) for mass production;special substrates (e.g., ceramic substrates) have better performance but higher cost (over $50 per square meter), suitable for high-end industrial PCBA.
