National Parks & Monuments

Echo Park is an incredible valley located in the heart of the Colorado side of Dinosaur National Monument - it's known as the centerpiece of the Monument's canyon country. Most people associate Dinosaur with the fossil quarry on the Utah side, but the lesser known Colorado side contains absolutely stunning views across deep canyons carved by the Green and Yampa Rivers. Echo Park sits just below the confluence of the Green and the Yampa. I took this photo from the Harpers Corner Trail, and we were just short of 2,500 feet above the Green River channel in the middle of the photo. Just to the left of Green is Steamboat Rock - an 800 ft tall sandstone monolith that presides over Echo Park. The deep canyon to the right of the river contains the dirt road that leads down to the park, as well as a number of Fremont petroglyphs and Whispering Cave. The Yampa River flows in from the left side of the photo and the Blue Mountain.

Echo Park got its name in 1869 during John Wesley Powell's survey after they had just finished running Lodore Canyon to the north. in the 1950s, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation had proposed a dam near Echo Park that would have completely flooded all of these canyons. That proposal was defeated in 1956 and preserved this wonderful area. If you haven't been to Dinosaur National Monument or have only been to the namesake Utah side, visit Echo Canyon - fantastic views and an incredible place to camp for the night.
