For this modernism assignment, I choose to take inspiration from the photographer, Alexander Rodchenko. The techniques Rodchenko was known for were unusual angles, sharp focus, repetition, and foreshortening. From his photographs, it seems as if the picture creates an illusion. The majority of the photographs he chose were of unique angles of landscapes, buildings, and people. These angles would either be above or below the subject to bring a new perspective and I think it stands out compared to other photographs. He would tell other photographers “take several different photographs of an object, from different places and positions as though looking it over.” He was also known for photomontage which later became his favorite technique.

In this photograph, I took a picture from below a jungle gym at the park which captured not only the jungle gym but the trees around it, giving it a unique perspective. The repeating patterns of the jungle gym add to the illusion that you’re inside the image. Like Rodchenko, I took a picture of a metal structure from an angle below which was my main goal. This photograph was taken on my iPhone and I changed the appearance of the photo by making it black and white while also increasing the sharpness, shadows, brightness, and definition. To follow Rodchenko style I made my picture as sharp as possible.
