The Gate of Felicity leads from the second to the third courtyard. It would be kept open during the day, but as it was the entrance to the sultan's private residence not just anyone could gain entrance. The Ottoman throne would be placed in front of the gate for ceremonies and to pay homage to the sultan but also in times of revolt and unrest.
