Eddystone Lighthouse Tower and Plymouth Hoe, Plymouth, Devon GBR.

 

The upper section of John Smeaton’s Eddystone Lighthouse (1759), re-sited on a new base in 1882, dominates Plymouth Hoe. This Grade I listed circular granite tower, with an octagonal lantern, ogee-shaped roof, ball finial, weather vane, and small four-pane windows, was a landmark technical achievement when first built.

 

Perched above Plymouth Sound, Plymouth Hoe is a Grade II listed historic site famed for sweeping views, public gardens, and memorials. Used for recreation since medieval times, it later hosted the Royal Citadel, the Drake Statue (1884), and the Armada Memorial (1888). Today, terraces, promenades, and the Tinside Lido blend its rich naval and civic history with modern leisure.
