The Naugatuck River is a 40-mile-long tributary of the Housatonic River in Connecticut, flowing south from Torrington to Derby. Formerly heavily polluted, it has undergone a dramatic restoration, transforming into a popular spot for trout and salmon fishing, hiking, and biking via the developing 44-mile Naugatuck River Greenway trail.Key Details About the Naugatuck River:Geography: As the largest river entirely within Connecticut, it flows through a corridor of 11 municipalities, including Torrington, Litchfield, Waterbury, Naugatuck, and Seymour.Restoration & Cleanup: Once a heavily industrial, polluted waterway, the river has seen a major comeback, with improved water quality supporting diverse wildlife.Recreation: The river is known for excellent trout and Atlantic Salmon fishing. Back in 1955, and after two consecutive back to back hurricanes, this river overflowed flooding the area badly and caused considerable damage in our town and adjacent towns.
This now inactive siding and railroad bridge that crosses the river, and once fed and supplied a mill a few hundred feet away. The mill, now converted to residential housing, once produced wool products for the military during the war years. History can be so darn interesting from time to time!
