I was equipped with fins, snorkel and a mask, and had a guide with me who led the way and made sure that we didn't get too close to the whale shark and that it wasn't disturbed.

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is not a hybrid of whale and shark, but rather a shark the size of a whale. Whale sharks are also the largest fish in the world. These giants are remarkably peaceful and not at all dangerous to humans.
The sharks have a striking blue-gray back covered in white spots and stripes, a light-colored belly, and a blunt mouth 1.5 meters wide. Through this large mouth, which spans the entire width of the head, the animals can pump out 6,000 liters of water per hour. Their gills filter plankton, algae, krill, and other microorganisms.

Der Walhai (Rhincodon typus) ist keine Mischung aus Wal und Hai, sondern vielmehr ein Hai von der Größe eines Wals. Walhaie sind zudem die größten Fische der Welt. Die Riesen sind besonders friedlich und überhaupt nicht gefährlich für Menschen.
Die Haie haben einen markant gefärbten blau-grauen Rücken, der übersät ist mit weißen Punkten und Streifen, einen hellen Bauch und ein 1,5 Meter breites, stumpfes Maul. Durch dieses große Maul, das sich über die gesamte Breite des Kopfes erstreckt, lassen die Tiere 6.000 Liter Wasser pro Stunde hindurchströmen. Die Kiemen filtern Plankton, Algen, Krill und andere Kleinstlebewesen.
