On a beautiful summer morning, NS P92 or the “Yadkin” heads south through rural Rowan County on Norfolk Southern’s N-Line. This is some classic Southern Railway branchline railroading. Dark territory, small towns, four-axle EMDs, and carload freight serving local businesses harken back to an era before the railroads began to shun smaller shippers in favor of intermodal and unit trains. Apparently this line was charming enough to warrant an inclusion in Dovetail Games’ Train Simulator a few years back, bringing this lovely branchline to a wider audience. The Yadkin wasn’t a bad job to work in real life either, and I caught it a few times during my time as a conductor. A Monday-Friday schedule and fairly straightforward customers made this one of the better jobs covered by the Charlotte/Greenville crew district. Gold Hill, NC, 7/14/2020.
