Lucky #709 El Cerrito, CA

This former Albertsons opened in 2002 as part of a major redevelopment of a former mall. Part of this development included replacing a former American Stores-owned Lucky, which is now a JoAnn craft store (store closed prior to merger) and a new Albertsons (because this was post merger) was opened to replace that store. Unfortunately, due to me trying to stay on schedule, I chose not to go next door into the now-closing JoAnn next door, which I now regret. However, I will be able to see more JoAnn sites soon before their closure.

This Albertsons opened with Blue and Green Awnings as one of the later stores with this interior. This store did open with a more unique layout, kind of a mix between the layout of a Grocery Palace and a Santa Fe/Jewel layout. There is one service counter at the end of produce which I am not very sure what it was, since the deli, bakery, and meat department counters could all be accounted for, and the now-closed pharmacy was located at the front of the store.

When Albertsons chose to ditch NorCal in 2007, like many former Albertsons sites, this store was sold to Save Mart to be rebranded as a Lucky in their attempt to revive the brand. Save Mart did their usual minor refresh when they took over the store, with a more thorough facelift occurring in late 2021. Even then, the awnings and the tile backsplash in the service departments still remain.

The pharmacy closed in 2022.
