Vons #2681 Upland, CA
Early 2000's build Vons in Upland. This Vons has some cool features, being that this Vons is along the original route of Route 66 (W Foothill Bend). It has a special pylon sign for the shopping center, and a Vons-branded gas station that is Route 66 themed.
This store was built on the land site of a planned Hughes Market which was meant to start construction in the late 90's. I'm not sure how this land site got into the hands of Vons, I'm not sure if plans were just shelved indefinitely when Hughes merged with Ralphs, or Ralphs and Hughes divested this land site to Vons as part of completing their merger.
There is a chance this Vons may have opened with the pre-Lifestyle decor, but for a majority of its life it has had the first version of Lifestyle. It was renovated recently to Modern, and held a grand reopening just a few weeks ago. The store after the remodel looks very clean, however, it's nothing too special. I think we see many cut corners on some of these more recent Modern remodels, with this store keeping the old Lifestyle backsplash in service departments, which doesn't match the new decor.
