Vons #2301 Santa Maria, CA
Here we find an out of the ordinary Vons store. It's a rarity in which this store has neither been "lifestyled" or closed in it's entire existence, unlike almost all other Vons stores which have met that fate at some point.
This store was one of 18 Williams Bros. Markets. As old as this store is, this former Williams Bros replaced an even older store next door, which is now occupied by a CVS, under the "y mas" moniker. I can't quite figure out when this store opened and replaced the smaller store, this store has been in existence for quite a long time. While I can't confirm if this interior is a Vons or a Williams Bros interior, I mildly suspect that with the exception of a few minor changes, this interior may be original to Williams Bros. The aisle markers are Lifestyle v1, the only Lifestyle addition to this store.
I do know that Vons acquired all but one Williams Bros location in 1993, which is around when this store became a Vons. Despite it's age and oddness in the Vons portfolio, this store outlasted another larger and newer Vons in Santa Maria, also a former Williams Bros, which closed in 2013. This store has since been under ownership of Vons, which has been acquired by Safeway, and then in turn was acquired by Albertsons, and none of these three corporations either closed the store, tore it down and rebuilt it, or closed it. It is amazing that we still have this store in existence in it's current form today.
The only service counter this store has is a deli. There likely was a butcher counter in the back of the store at some point based off of an opening in the back of the store, but it was replaced with a horizontal open air cooler at some point.
This store had a couple Albertsons shopping carts mixed in with the Vons shopping carts, as shown in one of the photos.
