Quantum Fold III – Missed opportunity? - Chapter 3/8

K’hall studied the display, his jaw tightening as the cloaked figures continued their silent surveillance.

He tapped the comm panel. “Avhal, prepare the wide-range perimeter neurostatic pulse. We take them alive if possible.” His eyes remained fixed on the screen. “Wait until the one inside the dwelling emerges.”

“Understood,” Avhal replied.

The room fell quiet. Minutes crawled past. The lone figure at the edge of the woods never moved, maintaining its watch while its companion remained hidden inside the cabin.

Adrienne leaned forward uneasily. “It’s been in there a long time. Is there any chance that creature can access the underground bunker?”

“I do not believe so,” Bext replied. She adjusted the sensor filters again, trying to cut through the interference.

“My readings still place it within the structure itself. However,” she added with a frown, “I cannot determine what it is doing.”

The silence deepened.

Everyone stared at the display, waiting.

Then the heat signature on the woods suddenly shifted position.

“It’s moving,” K’hall said quietly.

On the screen, the second figure in the woods straightened as if it had received some silent signal.

Avhal’s voice crackled over the comm again, sharper this time.

“We have additional visitors moving through the woods.”

Everyone turned back to the display.

The image zoomed out from the lone cloaked figure standing watch at the tree line as two enormous heat signatures materialized behind it.

The watcher barely had time to react. It spun and bolted from its hiding place, but the massive shapes closed the distance in an instant. One seized the figure, and together they dragged the struggling creature into the darkness.

Shrieks erupted through the speakers. Wild howls answered from deeper within the forest.

Then all three heat signatures vanished.

K’hall, Bext, Adrienne, and Kayla stared at the screen in stunned disbelief.

Kayla slowly exhaled. “Well...” she said. “Scratch that one.”

The howls echoed again across the valley.

Suddenly, the second cloaked figure burst from the cabin.

It emerged in an uncoordinated run, frantic and disoriented, whipping its head from side to side as it searched desperately for an escape route.

“Avhal, activate the stun pulse,” K’hall ordered. “Let’s not allow this one to get taken as well.”

“Activating.”

The creature sprinted across the clearing in a strange loping gait, arms churning through the dirt as it raced toward the road.

There was a flash as the neurostatic pulse struck.

The creature's body locked rigid mid-stride. Momentum carried it forward. It pitched through the air, tumbling end over end before crashing hard onto the dirt road, where it lay motionless.

“Direct hit,” Avhal reported. “Target is down.”

K’hall rose from his chair.

“It’s down,” he said. “Let’s retrieve it before it recovers.”

Eerie howls drifted through the fog-shrouded woods. Whatever had taken the first intruder was still out there.

“Wait, look!” Avhal shouted.

Everyone's attention snapped back to the display.

Two more enormous heat signatures emerged from the fog-shrouded woods.

They moved with startling speed.

Before anyone could react, the massive creatures reached the stunned creature sprawled on the road. One seized its arms while the other grabbed its legs.

“Avhal, fire the neurostatic pulse!” K’hall barked.

“Firing!”

There was a flash as the weapon discharged.

Nothing happened.

The towering forms were not affected.

For a moment, stunned silence filled the room as they watched enormous creatures dragged the limp figure into the darkness accompanied by loud shrieks. An answering chorus of eerie howls echoed through the forest. Within seconds, all three heat signatures vanished.

“That is impossible.” K’hall stared at the screen in disbelief His fist slammed onto the table with a sharp crack. “We had it.”

The missed opportunity hung heavily in the room.

He turned toward the comm.

“Avhal, run a full diagnostic on the pulse array. I want verification of output levels, frequency modulation, containment field stability, everything.”

“Diagnostics already in progress,” Avhal replied. “Preliminary readings show the pulse fired within normal operational parameters.”

K’hall growled. “Then those creatures possess a resistance we have never encountered before and vanished into thin air.”
