Quantum Fold III – The intruder - Chapter 2/5
Adrienne froze, shock rippling through her like a cold current. Every instinct screaming at her to jump back to the bunker—get out, get safe—but something pins her where she stands. She’s alarmed, yes, but not… threatened. And that made no sense. Her hand reached to feel her VDD in her pocket.
“How?” she thought. “No one should be able to enter the cabin, or even close to it, without tripping the Arcturian motion grid.”
The figure lingers in the shadows, watching her with complete, unnerving stillness. Then a man steps forward, the light catching him in fragments—broad shoulders first, then the hard planes of his face.
He’s tall. Solid. Unmistakably Native American.
“His expression doesn’t shift. He studies her, then sweeps his gaze across the cabin as if assessing every corner for danger. I am Moshota,” he says, slowly, voice deep enough to vibrate the air.”
“You and your friend should not be here. There is great danger. You have already been warned once. You are still here. You must leave this place and never return.”
Adrienne swallows, forcing her voice steady. “Why this warning? And how did you get inside?”
“My people live nearby. I came to warn you.” His tone remains flat, unwavering. “This place—these woods, the lake, the sky—has been taken by the snake people. My people have strong magic, but we cannot protect you. If you stay, the snake people will take you.”
“There are others living around here,” Adrienne says. “What about them?”
“They are in great danger. They have been warned, but they close their ears.”
“Who are the snake people? Where do they come from?”
“They are demons that appear as men with the heads of snakes. They come from beyond—a place where they are here, but also not.”
Adrienne exhales sharply. “That sounds like dimensional crossing.”
Moshota studies her, eyes narrowing just slightly. “You also come from a place beyond. You appeared before me like a spirit. Tell me how this is possible.”
“I’m not a spirit. But I can move through space like one.”
He considers this, head tilting slightly. “You are not like others. Magic surrounds you.”
“I carry the blood of the Ikon,” she says quietly. “An ancient people with many abilities.”
Moshota nods once—slow, solemn—as if acknowledging a truth older than the forest itself.
“I have many questions,” Adrienne says. “About the snake people.”
“Your magic will not keep you safe in this place. I must go now,” Moshota replies.
“Will I see you again?” Her voice softens, reaching for answers, for something to anchor the moment.
But Moshota does not answer. He slips out of the cabin and into the foggy mist, his outline thinning as the fog curls around him. Adrienne watches, frozen, as he moves toward the woods with a slow, deliberate stride.
She blinks.
For the briefest instant—so fast she almost doubts it—his shape warps. A bend in the silhouette, a wrongness in the posture, a flicker of something not quite human just before the fog swallows him whole.
Did he change shape just as he vanished into the fog? It was only a split second, but it reminded her of the creature she and Kayla had seen digging. Too far away to be certain.
“That was creepy, Maybe the security system managed to record that,” Adrienne muttered, breath tight. Her pulse hammered in her ears, loud enough to drown out the cabin’s silence. Something about Moshota was profoundly off.
How had he bypassed the Arcturian security system? And how had he sensed her arrival—instantly, precisely—like he’d been waiting for her?
Her confidence in the Arcturian grid was completely gone.
Thunder cracked overhead, a sharp, violent clap that made the cabin shudder. Rain followed in a sudden rush, spilling through the jagged hole in the roof.
Adrienne looked up at the widening stream, jaw tightening, then dragged a bucket beneath it to catch the steady pour.
She let out a long, weary sigh as the first droplets pinged against the tin.
