Quantum Fold III – A Visitor - Chapter 1/5
The rest of the night passed quietly, and by morning the girls were back on the surface, continuing the cabin cleanup.
Kayla paused, head tilted. “Do you hear that?”
“Yeah. It’s coming this way,” Adrienne said.
An ATV rumbled down the dirt road and rolled to a stop in a cloud of dust. The driver waved before climbing off.
The girls waved back, exchanging a quick look. Adrienne muttered under her breath, “Now what…”
“Howdy, howdy ladies,” the man called as he waved again. “I’m Chad Vrooman. I heerd down to the tavern that we had new neighbors.” He was older, dressed in a T shirt and overalls, friendly in that rural, unhurried way.
“Hi, I’m Kayla, and this is Adrienne,” Kayla said. “Yes, we’ll be staying here for a while. It’s nice to meet a neighbor.”
“My place is just up the road a piece and round the curve,” Chad looked over at the cabin and said. “Ain’t been nobody stayin’ at the old Pettigrew place in some time. We seen some fancy white hair fellas lookin’ the place over and figured we’d be havin’ newcomers.”
He gave the girls a slow once over. “Are you’uns flatlanders?” Chad spat his chaw into the dust.
Kayla wrinkled her nose.
Adrienne answered, “Nooo. Just from downstate. We wanted to get away and see a few stars.” She swatted a mosquito on her cheek. “Fancy white hair fellows, you say? They probably decided this place needed more work than they wanted to do.”
“Well, good you'uns ain’t flatlanders. I like yas better already. I reckon ya kin see lots of stars, fur sure.”
Chad paused, squinting at Kayla like he was lining up a memory. “Say… ain’t you that girl I seen on the internet?”
Kayla shot back fast. “No! That must be someone else.”
Chad hitched his thumbs under his overall straps and went on, “You’uns need to hike down to the lake. They’s a tavern there. It ain’t far. Maggie’ll fix ya two up with real good food. Best Friday fish fry anywheres.”
“Not to sound crazy,” Kayla said, “but have you ever seen unusual lights in the sky?”
Chad shrugged. “Ya talkin’ ’bout them circle lights? Ya sure, I’ve seen ’em.”
“Yeah, those,” Kayla said. “We saw one last night and wondered what it was.”
“Odd things, but they ain’t never caused no trouble. I don’t pay ’em any mind,” Chad said.
He paused, studying them more closely. “This ain’t like downstate. I know you ladies wanna see stars, but round here folks stay inside after dark ’cause of the wildlife and stuff.”
Adrienne deadpanned, “Stuff? What kind of stuff, Chad.”
