Quantum Fold II – The Core’s field - Chapter 12/8
Adrienne stepped through the glowing field, its radiance clinging to her like a living membrane. The barrier felt impossibly vast—miles thick—each step dragging as though space itself resisted her. Her thoughts drifted, dissolving into strange dream-like abstractions.
“Focus. I need to do this. I’m so close.”
Time thinned toward stillness. Each breath stretched longer than the last. The world dimmed at the edges, motion collapsing into near silence.
Then— she sensed a presence.
Someone else was inside the field with her.
She glanced over her shoulder. A man. No—one of those men she’d seen before, his form stuttering in the slow-time haze. His voice reached her as a warped echo, calling for her to halt.
“Haste!” The Vey’thira’s voice struck through her mind, sharp as a blade.
The wisps around her churned, agitated— and faces began to form within them. Ghostly, elongated, unmistakably Vey’thira.
“What about the man following me?” she whispered.
“Haste. You must reach the Engine.”
She turned forward again. The man’s shape dissolved into the distortion, but she still felt him— a pressure at her back, a presence threading through the slowing air.
Her vision tunneled. The world spun in a slow, sickening spiral. If not for the Core’s pull—steady, relentless—she knew her body would have folded to the ground.
And still the field thickened around her, urging her onward, demanding she endure.
