Quantum Fold II – And then… - Chapter 11/6

Sireth and Voltar’s argument bought Kayla precious seconds. Their voices carried even into the cargo bay, sharp and escalating, and she knew the crew was listening with rapt attention. In her short time among the Corogins, she’d learned one thing: if there was even the slightest chance Sireth might murder Voltar, no one wanted to miss the show.

The cargo bay itself was packed to the bulkheads. The Corogins had spent hours arguing over the nature of the Aeternum Core—what it was, what it could do, how they might control it. Beyond the fragmented documents the hybrids had uncovered in the Earth tomb, along with the codex the Arcturians had decyphered no one truly understood the device. Only that it could manipulate all time and space.

Which meant, of course, that the Corogins assumed it must be a supercomputer. So they’d loaded the cargo bay with towering processors, crates of electronics, and enough interface equipment to wire a small moon. In truth, they had no idea what they were doing. They were hoping to figure it out once they arrived.

Kayla’s plan was simple—dangerously simple. She eased one grenade from its protective case, attached a length of wire she’d scavenged from the computer crates to the arming pin, and nestled the grenade back among the others. Then she cracked the cargo bay door and peeked outside.

Perfect.

Every Corogin within earshot had gathered around Sireth and Voltar, forming a loose circle of bloodthirsty spectators. Kayla slipped to the ground, fastened the loose end of the wire to the bottom edge of the door, and pushed it shut.

The ground outside was littered with the bodies of Horocyclians—massive insectoid creatures—apparently killed by the Necrostatic Pulse. Some still twitched. She was undecided if they were more revolting dead or alive. She stepped around them and darted to the nearest structure, keeping low.

When the argument finally fizzled out—accompanied by disappointed grumbling that no one had died—a group of crewmen trudged back to the cargo bay and opened the door.

Nothing happened.

Kayla frowned from her hiding place. Great. Perfect. Brilliant plan, Kayla. At least she hadn’t been discovered.

Then the grenade detonated.

The blast triggered the rest of the ordnance in the bay. A chain of explosions ripped through the transport, fire blooming outward in violent waves. Anyone not killed instantly was hurled across the ground. The ship tore apart in a storm of metal and flames, debris raining down around her. She pressed back into the structure as fragments clattered across the stone.

“Well done, Kayla,” she muttered under her breath. She’d only meant to create a diversion—to ruin the Corogins’ equipment. She hadn’t expected to obliterate the entire transport long with most of the crew. But chaos was chaos, and she wasn’t about to complain.

In the confusion that followed, she slipped deeper into the Core complex. Its architecture—vast, ancient, labyrinthine—offered countless places to hide. And from here, she had a perfect vantage point to watch the Corogins but behind her the bright glow in the sky had her attention.
