Quantum Fold II – Aion - Chapter 4/6
Adrienne did not fall through the portal so much as unravel into it. One moment she was reaching back toward Kayla’s outstretched hand, the next she was flung across a gulf of folded dimensions, her body stretched thin as a thought.
Everything rapidly swirled around her as if she was inside a tornado. The air was sucked from her lungs. Adrienne felt she was suffocating. She fought it but finally blacked out.
When she struck ground again, it was on a world suspended in the gravitational stillness at the exact center of the universe… the planet Aion.
She was lying on cold stone. She could breathe but was sick to her stomach and everything was blurry. She lay still, trying to gather her thoughts. Slowly everything came into focus. Her surroundings were similar to those in the cavern. Stone walls and columns with hieroglyphs.
Her legs trembled when she pushed herself upright. She needed to get back. Back through the portal. Back to the others. But how had it taken her like that?
She felt the wall behind her… rippled but solid. Where was the portal? Panic surged. She moved from wall to wall, searching, slapping her hands against the stone. Nothing.
She forced herself to stop, sit, breathe. She pulled out her VDD and keyed in her apartment coordinates. A red warning blinked: LOCATION DOES NOT EXIST. The cavern coordinates—same result. Kayla’s VDD—not registering. She tried the Vtec Reyka had given her. Only dead silence.
At least she still had her backpack. She had water, a few granola and cashew bars, flashlight, binoculars and her .45 automatic pistol. She drew the pistol from its holster fitted to the backpack. She looked around, then racked the slide to load a round into the chamber, safety on and returned it to the holster. Just in case, she thought.
Her head cleared. Her pulse steadied. She shouldered the pack and moved down the corridor toward a doorway. She paused, listening—nothing—and stepped outside. This place was not a cave like she expected but rather a stone building.
The air was thin and tasted faintly of sulfur. The sun shone bright, but the sky was wrong—dark grey due to the thin atmosphere. Rhe sky was a vast sphere of drifting constellations and wandering planets clearly visible, as if the heavens themselves were rotating around her.
The land was dry and completely barren. Dust. Stone. Silence. A path cut across the plain a few hundred yards away. Better than standing around here, she thought. She brushed grit from her clothes and headed toward it.
She knew she wasn’t alone. The hybrid soldiers had come through the portal as well. Boot tracks crisscrossed the dusty soil—fresh, numerous leading toward the path.
The sound of a distant explosion rolled across the landscape.
Stay alert she told herself. They probably weren’t far ahead.
