Quantum Fold II – New orders - Chapter 4/5
“Commander K'hall, are you absolutely certain the portal is no longer functional?” Chairman Sythis demanded.
“Absolutely certain,” K’hall replied. “The portal has solidified. We believe its power source was the Horocyclians themselves. Once they were destroyed, it finally failed. I am certain that explosion you witnessed has severely damaged the temple, probably collapsing part of the passage. We will need a crew with heavy excavation bots just to see if the portal is still there.”
“This is unacceptable. Gather your people and return to Axiom10 at once.” The comm cut out.
“Avhol,” K’hall said, jaw tight, “alert Ramva2, 8, and 9 of our orders.”
“That’s it?” Kayla cried. “We’re leaving without Adrienne?”
K’hall turned to her, voice stern but heavy. “What would you have me do? This strikes me deeply. I have never lost anyone under my command. We cannot reach her from here.”
He faced the screen again, anger simmering as hybrid soldiers swarmed the temple ruins.
“Bext—charge weapons.
Avhol, instruct Ramva2, 8, and 9 to charge weapons as well. Tell them to target the hybrids and the installation below in the canyon. Fire on my command.”
Avhol’s hands flew over the controls. Moments later, “Ramva 2, 8, and 9 report weapons charged and they are in position.”
K’hall took the comm, watching the frantic activity as the helicopters again maneuvered close to the ledge outside what had been the temple entrance.
Then— he spoke into the comm, “Fire! The added, “Burn it all. Leave nothing!”
Four beams of energy lanced downward from the orbs. The ground operation vanished first, then the beams swept the ridge, and the cliff face the ridge. When it was finished, no trace remained.
K’hall watched the devastation, his voice a low growl. “I thought we were done with these vile creatures when the eggs were destroyed. Yet here we are again.”
He turned away from the screen. “Bext—contact the other ships and take us to Axiom10.”
