Quantum Fold II – Field trip - Chapter 2/3
Adrienne cinched her backpack shut with a sharp tug. “Phone, film camera, notepad, pencils, flashlights, the spotlight… and enough batteries to survive the apocalypse. Plus, a canteen. Tell me we’re not missing anything.”
Kayla held up two small travel clocks. “These. One stays at the cavern entrance. The other comes with us. If time slips again, I want evidence.” Her voice thinned. “Four days vanished. Four. And we were inside for minutes.”
Adrienne exhaled slowly. “That’s… actually brilliant.”
“And,” Kayla added, “you can explain to Reyka why we’re going back.”
Adrienne shot her a look. “Me? He ordered us not to go back.”
“No,” Kayla said, steady but uneasy. “He 'advised' us not to. There’s a difference.”
Adrienne’s eyes narrowed. “He was hiding something. I could feel it.”
Kayla shrugged, though unease flickered across her face. “I felt that too. Maybe he suspected something but didn’t know for sure. Either way, we’ve been inside once. We know what we’re walking into.”
They stepped outside.
The rain had stopped hours ago, but the air felt heavy, as if the storm hadn’t really left.
They took two steps—and froze.
Huge muddy tracks looped around the building—deep, smeared impressions circling the apartment like something had paced there for hours. The densest cluster right at their doorstep, as if something had waited there. Watching.
Adrienne’s voice came out thin. “That… dog did follow us.”
“Maybe it wanted shelter.” Kayla shut the door behind them.
The latch clicked.
Both girls stiffened.
Carved into the wood—fresh, raw, splintered—was a single word:
DANGER
A cold ripple crawled up Adrienne’s spine. “That wasn’t here last night.”
Kayla crouched, studying the grooves. “These cuts are new. Hours old at most.” She swallowed. “Who would do this? And why leave it for us? It has to be some kind of joke.”
Adrienne’s voice tightened. “A joke that’s going to cost us our security deposit.”
Adrienne scanned the street. Empty. Too still. No birds.
“We’re being watched,” she whispered. “I can feel it.”
Kayla straightened slowly.
“Maybe this is what Reyka meant… when he said to use extreme caution.”
Adrienne’s fingers tightened around her backpack straps. “Let’s go. I’m hungry. We can talk more at breakfast.”
