Letter on reverse: "Im Feld, d. 9. 6. 17. Hochw. Herr Pfarrer! Dieses als Zeichen daß ich immer noch zu den Lebenden zähle. Geht mir Gott sei Dank noch immer gut, trotz dem wir schwere Tage hinter uns haben. Stehe an der Champagne-Front (bei Reims) wo in den letzten 4 Wochen viel Blut gefloßen ist. [...]"
‘In the field, 9 June 1917. Reverend Father! I am sending this photo as a sign that I am still among the living. I am still well, thank God, despite the hard days we have had. I am on the Champagne front (near Reims) where much blood has been shed in the last 4 weeks.’
