One last photo of this beautiful river which flows through one of the most spectacular karst landscapes in the world. This is an out-of-the-way place in Central China but, increasingly, it is becoming one of the most popular tourist destinations in China. In 1994, when I went, it was still considered a fairly exotic and difficult-to-reach place, so few people went. Also, let's not forget that before 1974 – i.e. a mere 20 years before I went – there were no tourists going to China; the country was completely closed to foreigners except for a select few like Richard Nixon who went there in 1972 (but he never went to Guilin during that trip; he only managed to get to the Great Wall!).
