Soviet Space Medals

For the Crazy Tuesday challenge: Memories.

This memory is of the World Stamp Expo 2000 held in Anaheim, California, from July 7 to July 11, 2000, featuring the release of a collection of 15 space-themed postage stamps, including the United States' first holographic stamp. The theme of the event was space exploration and in addition to postal officials from 26 countries both NASA and the Soviet Space Agency sent representatives and displays. NASA had a life size walk through mockup of the soon to be occupied International Space Station in two semitrailers and several stations where patrons could try their hand at docking the Space Shuttle with the Space Station. The Soviets were showing off several space related things and gave away these cool medals honoring various Soviet space accomplishments.

I'm not really a stamp collector in the traditional sense but I do have a large collection of unused panes of commemorative stamps including all of the space stamps released at that expo. What I am though is an avid space nut which is the main thing that attracted me to the event. the Space Station mockup was amazing and after a few tries I even managed to dock the shuttle with the station in their computerized simulator. It was amazing fun and I still have many fond memories of the event.

As a side note the Avery company previewed the prototype self stick stamps that would soon replace the lick and seal ones. I was impressed with that innovation too.

Happy Crazy Tuesday and Good Memories to you all.
