Failed Hydraulics
Loading coal isn't always a smooth ride. Accidents do happen and if you don't know what you're doing, something like this could happen. In this case, no one was at fault- a hose that fed the hydraulic system within the Lynch 3 flood loader burst, meaning that the chute couldn't be closed. With the belts still feeding coal and the train still rolling, a rather large pile of coal quickly accumulated in between 2 of the hoppers on this Cleveland Cliffs train. The coal then had to be shoveled by hand to open enough space for the conductor to then cut the train so that machinery could wiggle in enough to clear the mess. If that wasn't enough, once the hose had been repaired, the belts had to be cleared before the chute could close once again, leaving another mountain of coal to clear. At that point, a skid loader and wiggle tail did the job rather quickly.
