Globular springtails investigating millipede frass
I put a small chunk of millipede frass in my Ptenothrix marmorata culture, just to see if they might be interested in it. It turns out they are! At least at first.
They didn't seem particularly interested in eating it. But they had to at least come check it out, and a number of individuals everted their vesicles onto it. It wasn't particularly wet or anything, so I'm thinking maybe it has some particular ion/nutrient they need, and can absorb via their vesicles?
At the very beginning of the video, an adult comes by, climbs onto it and everts its vesicles. And then, starting at about 1:00 or so, it seems like there's a steady stream of individuals coming to check it out.
