WHO-YEM-2022-May-Oxygen Re-filling Project-Aden-Al Sadaqa Hospital (6)
While oxygen cylinders arrive at Al Sadaqa Hospital in Aden Governorate.
Oxygen refilling service is a critical service that needs an exit strategy to avoid any challenges with
providing such a life-saving service. As the oxygen stations in the IRG region are still not fully
installed nor operational, there is still a gap in the need for oxygen, particularly in the USAID supported health facilities that are not covered by any other donor. Moreover, the current
vaccination rate in the southern governorates is still very low, despite all the efforts being made to
do community sensitization and offer vaccination in fixed sites. For that reason, the risk of COVID-19
exposure and complications is still high.
The current consumption of oxygen (number of oxygen cylinders) for the USAID supported HFs for
Jan & Feb = 9,880 cylinders for 24 HFs. Based on the current consumption rates and health facility’s
need for oxygen, WHO calculated the projections for oxygen refilling services for the next 6 months,
from April 2022 to September 2022. Table 1 below shows the breakdown of the supported facilities
and their oxygen consumption projections.
For the above reasons, we advise continuing to provide this life-saving service of oxygen refilling for
the third and fourth quarters with a total amount of USD 519,000, utilizing the remaining balance.
As the COVID-19 evolves in Yemen, WHO will continue updating USAID on the oxygen situation and
the priority activities needed to sustain effective case management of COVID-19.
