Osprey Escape

This is a different attempt at catching a fish that the one pictured below the snow fence photos. Both attempts were unsuccessful.

The way these big birds can hover and liftoff with a heavy fish in their talons is impressive. In this picture we see the fish escape...it seemed the osprey never really had the fish in his talons.

The osprey (fish hawk) can have a wingspan of 6 feet and its unique characteristics classify it in its own taxonomic group. The osprey and owls are the only raptors whose outer toe is reversible, allowing them to grasp their prey with two toes in front and two behind. This is particularly helpful when they grab slippery fish.
