EV +/- (exposure value) is a number that has aperture and shutter speed, like a setting. As you select the positive numbers for your EV, that means that your object is supposed to be bright on a bright area (white on white). If you are selecting EV with negative, your object is supposed to be dark in a dark place (Black on black). The light is coming from the left and the shadow is on the right side, beneath the object.
Although my images don't look a lot like Michael Vahrenwald's, his work inspired me. Mainly because of his detailed shadows. I love his work's black background and then the detailed shadows of the texture in front of it.
