Light shunters in heavy industry
The filth and sad weather on this picture create a perfectly fitting background for the 401Da-479, which is shunting around with a short set of empty gondolas, after unloading at its home.
The Bytom coking plant in the city part Bobrek was established in 1859 as a part of the steel mill located in its direct proximity (which worked under the very epic-sounding names of Vulkan, Moritz and Julia/Julienhütte). It currently produces around 200kt of coke each year, which roughly amounts to 550kg each day - around the mass of 1/4th of the load of a full-scale cargo train. It therefore doesn't get as much traffic from the outside.
There currently appear to be two working 401Da locomotives here (the other being no. 238) and SM30-591 which very rarely is at work. I seem to have been lucky to catch -479, because usually the fresher-looking -238 fulfills shunting duties here.
