Night Shift
I took this photograph in late April as a personal photography mission. Most of these train interiors (gwr 165) had been replaced with a green GWR interior, and the few remaining trains on my local railway line with these purple interiors only had a month or so left when I took this photograph. I knew that this interior would stand out really well at night with the bright pink purple and blue colours inside, and I wanted to contrast these bright colours against a black, dark unlit background in order to showcase the interior. To do this, I went into Gorrick Woodland late in the evening after sunset, as no human lighting is present in this woodland, so street lamps and lights would not affect the outside lighting of the train. Because of this, in order to freeze movement I had to use ISO 6400, to permit my shutter speed to reach 1/320th. I used burst mode in order to gain a variety of different images, with this being the strongest as the train went by. I was really pleased with the result, as it is an interesting and artistic approach to photographing a train, as only the lights from the train itself are picked up by the sensor, as the rest of the frame is dark and unlit. In editing, I used the dodge & burn tool in order to remove grain from the black background, and clean the image somewhat, although this was not possible in the inside of the train, which is why grain is prominent in those areas.
